What should never have been bought
Every wardrobe contains a record of its owner's worst moments of judgement. Read it, then release it.
What I would keep
The two or three impulses that turned out to be instinct. They tell you who you are.
What I would change
Everything bought in a hurry, at a discount, or to become someone you didn't become.
Why
The mistakes are informative once and expensive forever. Learn the pattern and the spending stops.
I do not run edits to make people feel guilty. I run them because the pattern in the discards is the most useful information in the room.
Three patterns account for almost everything: bought on sale, bought in a rush before an event, bought for an imagined life. Once a client can name their pattern, they stop repeating it — and the saving over a year is far larger than my fee.
Keep the good impulses. Those were instinct, and instinct is the thing we are trying to train. Release the rest without ceremony.
